Moab's Moenkopi Line of Japanese Papers

If you're ready to try printing images on materials other than photo and art papers or canvas, check out the new Moenkopi collection of environmentally friendly Japanese Washi Papers that is being sold by Moab by Legion Paper.

Washi papers, which have been part of the Japanese printmaking tradition for over 14 centuries, are made from Kozo (mulberry) and Hemp fibers which can be harvested without destroying the plants. The collection includes three grades:

Kozo 110 has the smooth surface of a hot-press art paper without losing the sensual nature of traditional Washi. The white, 110 gsm sheets are available in A4 and 13 x 19-in. sizes in 10-count packages.

Unryu 55 is a 55 gsm, decorative sheet made by adding long, coarse fibers to a wet layer of Kozo on the mould. It is available in 10-sheet packs in A4 and 13 x 19-in. sizes and 44-in. rolls.

Bizan 300 are natural-white, 300 gsm sheets made by hand by Japanese artisans using kozo and hemp fibers. The papers feature four naturally deckled edges and are dried beneath the rising sun. Because every sheet is different, the paper can be used with inkjet printing and post-print embellishments to create one-of-a-kind original artworks. This paper is sold in single-sheet packs for $15 each. Sheets are available in A4 and A3 sizes only.

The papers are made at the Awagami Factory, which has been operated by nine generations of the Fujimori family since the late 1700s.

"We are excited by the opportunity to work with Awagami in introducing such innovative products to the art and photography markets," said Gregory Schern, director of digital imaging at Legion Paper. "Artists are always searching for new media to create work, and the unique texture and characteristics of Moenkopi present opportunities for creatives who are looking to push the boundary. Moab by Legion Paper is enthusiastic to introduce another product that will open the door to new levels of creativity."
